FoodBev SETA Bursary 2023 for Unemployed South Africans

FoodBev SETA Bursary 2023 for Unemployed South Africans

DEADLINE: 17 February 2023

About FoodBev SETA

Food & Beverages Manufacturing Sector Education and Training Authority’s (FoodBev SETA) function is to promote, facilitate and incentivise skills development in the Food and Beverage Manufacturing Sector. FoodBev SETA is one of 21 Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) across the economy mandated to put the National Skills Development Strategy (NSDS) into practice.

FoodBev SETA Bursary 2023 for Unemployed South Africans

FoodBev SETA is offering financial assistance to unemployed youth through bursaries. Known as the FoodBev SETA bursary programme, it aims to create the required talent pool for critical and scarce skills needed in this sector. As opposed to other traditional bursaries where students apply for funding, this bursary invites the universities to apply on their behalf. So students must get in touch with their university representatives if they want to get the funding for their education.

For the academic session, FoodBev SETA will award bursaries to Doctorate (PhD) or Master’s degree students. The study programme must be related to Food and Beverage Manufacturing and its value chain.

The bursary fund was created as a response to the growing need for research, development, and innovation in the F&B manufacturing sector. It has been awarding financial aid to needy students every year.

The coverage of the FoodBev SETA 2023 bursary is as follows:

  • For Masters students – Maximum funding of R 120,000 per annum, which covers registration fees, research cost, and study material
  • For PhD students – Maximum funding of R 150,000 per annum, which covers tuition fees and research cost

The exact amount will depend on the evaluation, and it will be for the entire duration of the study.

Eligibility Criteria For The FoodBev SETA Bursary

There are certain eligibility criteria for this bursary programme. Everyone applying for funding must fulfill all of the criteria before being considered for funding.

The eligibility requirements for FoodBev SETA are:

  • Must be either a South African citizen, permanent resident, or naturalized citizen
  • Must be studying towards a PhD or Masters qualification
  • Must be studying a public university in South Africa that’s recognised
  • For Masters students, their research topics must have been endorsed by the respective supervisors and be related to the F&B manufacturing value chain
  • For PhD students, the research proposal must have been approved by the university. The time frame and year of completion should have been decided as well (SETA considers 2 to 5 years as the expected year of completion for reporting purposes)
  • Must not be receiving funding from other bursary or scholarship programme (as confirmed by the University Bursary Office)

Fulfilling all of the criteria doesn’t guarantee funding. Preference is given to students belonging to a previously disadvantaged background. The decision taken by FoodBev SETA regarding the selection will be considered final.
