Located in Midrand, on the N1 between Johannesburg and Pretoria, Unisa Graduate School of Business Leadership (SBL) is one of the leading business schools in South Africa. The SBL offers a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration (PGDBA), Postgraduate Diploma in Project Management (PGDPM), Postgraduate Diploma in Supply Chain Management (PGDSCM), a Master of Business Leadership (MBL), a Master of Business Administration (MBA), and a Doctor of Business Leadership (DBL) as well as several Executive Education programmes. The SBL is committed to its vision: “To be the leading African business school of choice offering internationally recognised leadership and management education.”

Even though the Covid-19 pandemic has fundamentally changed how we work, and how we support our students and communities, the SBL is reinventing itself to be at the forefront of shaping new business agendas by seeking value-adding ways in four research focus areas:

  1. Responsible Leadership in Practice; (2) Sustainable Livelihoods; (3) Intra-Africa Trade and Investment; and (4) Digital Transformation and Innovation.

The SBL seeks to appoint suitably qualified and experienced candidates as Full Professors (P5) in the following fields:

  • Ethics & Governance
  • Supply Chain Management
  • Intra-Africa Trade & Investment

The purpose of the job is to:

  • provide general academic leadership in the development of curricula by applying UNISA’s Open-Distance-Learning (ODL) tuition delivery model and ensuring that the area/department’s curricula contribute to graduateness1 of students
  • supervise/promote Master and Doctoral students
  • support and assess postgraduate students (formative, as well as summative assessment)
  • conduct research that could be discipline, field and/or subject specific in order to produce at least five accredited research outputs in a period of three years, thereby enhancing the University’s standing as a research institute of international repute
  • improve discipline expertise through research and produce accredited research outputs
  • be involved in community engagement and academic citizenship and
  • contribute to achieving the department’s strategic and operational objectives through the above-mentioned endeavours.

Applicants are required to indicate in detail on their CVs to what extent their qualifications and experience meet the requirements of the post as set out below.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Qualifications

Applicable academic qualification at NQF level 10 (e.g. PhD or LLD)

  • Experience
  • Must have 7 years relevant experience in the field of Application
  • Must have at least 7 years of relevant experience in one or more of the following focus areas:
    • Responsible Leadership
    • Intra-Africa Trade and Investment
    • Digital Transformation and Innovation
    • Sustainable Livelihoods

Teaching and Learning

  • Must have at least seven years teaching experience
  • Must have completed an assessor training program
  • Must be able to make an insightful presentation (in content and form) on a topic that is of interest in the discipline to the selection committee.
  • Supervision of masters and at least one doctoral candidate to completion
  • Evidence that she/he has produced satisfactory student pass rates in the past two years of employment at his/her institution.
  • Demonstration of scholarship of teaching and learning
  • Experience with teaching in an Open Distance e-Learning environment will be an advantage

.A teaching statement of not more than 2000 words must be submitted with the application. Where applicable the statement must include at least the following topics:

  • Teaching philosophy
  • Teaching strategy to ensure effective teaching and learning
  • The candidate’s involvement in or approach to teaching at either undergraduate or postgraduate level
  • The candidate’s involvement in developing study material
  • The extent to which the candidate makes use of online learning management system
  • The pass, success and throughput rates in the courses and qualifications the candidate teaches and the candidate’s plans to increase these rates
  • Peer and student evaluations of the candidate’s teaching
  • The candidate’s involvement in and providing learner support to students

The teaching statement must be supported by a portfolio of evidence, which may be requested by the short listing and/or selection committees.

A motivation statement must be submitted with the application outlining how the applicant has met the Teaching and Learning requirements. Reference must be provided in the CV.

Research

  • Demonstrated potential to engage in research
  • Qualification plus accredited research outputs or research reports or supervision of post graduate students or any other research activity providing proof of potential to do research
  • Must have published in an accredited journal in the past 5 years
  • Must submit a research reflection portfolio
  • Applicants from academia must have at least published an equivalent of 7 research units in the past 5 years OR 5 units in the past 3 years.
  • Applicants from other institutes other than academia must have at least published an equivalent of 5.5 research units in the past 5 years OR 3.5 units in the past 3 years

Community engagement / Engaged scholarship

  • Applicants from academia must demonstrate active involvement in community engagement, with evidence of how this has been transferred into teaching and learning/ curriculum transformation/ research outputs
  • Applicants from other than academia must demonstrate potential to participate in community engagement as well as an understanding of community engagement in terms of teaching and learning and engaged research.
  • Applicants from academia and other than academia must submit evidence of the impact of the engagement on the community

Academic citizenship

  • Willingness to participate in departmental, school, college and University committees including task teams and voluntary associations
  • Evidence of membership in at least one relevant professional body or learned society.
  • Knowledge of

MS Office Suite such as, MSWord, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Outlook, as well as other software programmes that are relevant for teaching and research.
