Solar Plant Internship for Young South Africans

For more than 20 years, Globeleq has been a long-term investor, developer, owner and operator of diversified power projects in Africa, where the company is one of the largest Independent Power Producers. With nearly 1500MW of generation capacity in operation across 14 power plants in 6 countries, 760MW in construction or near operation and >2000MW in development, Globeleq is one of the largest independent power producers solely focused in Africa. Globeleq is 70% owned by British International Investment and 30% by Norfund, the development finance institutions of
the UK and Norway, and has a proven track record for supporting the ongoing development of the African power sector.

Globeleq’s various generation technologies include gas, wind, solar PV, battery energy storage (BESS), and, geothermal. The company is also actively pursuing new opportunities which are emerging from the energy transition, including desalination projects powered by renewables, as well as green hydrogen and ammonia projects.

The Solar Plant Intern is responsible to assist in the maintenance and operations of the plant. This may include assisting with the implementation of plant optimisation projects, under guidance by the Solar Technician(s) and Site Manager.

As this is an internship position, applicants should have no more than 1 year’s relevant working experience.

Key Responsibilities

1.  Assist with the planning, preparation for and management of, activities pertaining to maintaining, testing, diagnosing, repairing and replacing PV system electrical components which will include the following:

  • Investigate technical failures and prepare formal report
  • Participate in ensuring that contractors comply with HSE requirements
  • May require standby duties
  • Prepare Requests for Quotes as needed, to source service providers or purchase goods
  • Report significant events to the relevant Solar Technician(s), Line Manager and/or Site Manager

2.  Assist Solar PV Technician(s) with monthly inspection
3.  Participate in the compilation of data for weekly and/or monthly report
4. Assist HSE&Q Officers with tasks, as require
5.  Assist with conducting site visits and specific induction sessions
6.  Participate in general site administrative duties
7.  Any other duties, as assigned by the Line Manager and Solar Technician(s), in line with the role

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Skills and Competencies

  1.  Able to troubleshoot and analyze data including following various types of process charts, schematics, single line diagrams
  2.  Good written and oral communication skills
  3.  Well-organized and responsive in all communications including clear, concise e-mails
  4.  Good team player; able to balance team and individual responsibilities
  5.  Good presentation skills
  6.  Able to manage stress and high-pressure situations
  7.  Able to handle multiple projects, prioritize work and work effectively under limited supervision

Experience, Knowledge and Qualifications

  1.  Minimum of a N4 Electrical Certificate or a National Diploma in Mechatronic or Electrical Engineering, with only experiential learning outstanding
  2.  As this is an internship position, applicants should have no more than 1 year’s relevant working experience
  3.  Working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages including Outlook, PowerPoint, Word and Excel
  4.  Able to read and interpret single line diagrams and schematics
  5.  Able to analyse data, investigate and report on trends
  6.  A basic understanding of general SCADA systems
  7.  Able and willing to work in an outdoor environment
  8.  A basic understanding of the below will be advantageous:
  • PV plant operations
  • PLC troubleshooting and maintenance
  • Switching LV, MV and HV systems
  • Lock-out tag-out procedures
  • Power system protection

9. General ERP/CMMS knowledge is an advantage: SAP, Ellipse, SAGE, Maximo, etc.
10. Code B driver’s license is an advantage
