List of scholarships at the University of Johannesburg (UJ)

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) offers the following scholarships internally and from its partners. Some of the scholarships are currently not accepting new applications, so opening dates or links to sites to track updates will be provided in this article where necessary. Below is a list of scholarships at the University of Johannesburg (UJ)

1. ASIM Degree Mobility Scholarships

This scholarship is offered by ASIM, a consortium of 4 universities in South Africa, Malawi, Tanzania, Nigeria, and England. It operates under the European Union Commission Grant on Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme and aims to enhance talent in the Infrastructure sector.

The scholarship supports Masters and Ph.D. students only. The students must be studying for the following degrees: Master in Civil Engineering; Masters-Construction Management; Master in Sustainable Urban Planning and Development; Ph.D. in Civil Engineering; and Ph.D. in Construction Management. 

Under this program, scholarship holders are entitled to a subsistence Allowance of €600 for Masters, and €900 for Doctorates. They also receive tuition fees valued at €3,500 for Masters, and €4,000 for Doctorates. In addition to tuition fee support, the scholarship covers travel and VISA costs as per the travel band of the scholarship-holder.

2. Ruth First Education Trust Scholarship

It is offered by the Ruth First Educational Trust and Durham University to students in South Africa taking a one-year taught course in the academic year 2023-24 leading to the award of a Master’s degree at Durham University.

Candidates must demonstrate an active commitment to and leadership in volunteer work for causes such as rural or urban community development, young people or educational projects, charitable organizations, health or AIDS awareness projects, student welfare or guidance, human rights defence, equal opportunities or social justice promotion, and environmental sustainability. If one has paid employment that requires them to work in such areas, they should demonstrate leadership and dedication that goes beyond the job responsibilities.

Awarded scholars will receive a monthly living allowance for 12 months, free accommodation and meals at St Chad’s College. In 2023, the allowance is £525 per month and accommodation is about £530 per month. In addition, the awarded scholar will receive a settling-in payment upon arrival in the UK. The Trust will also provide funding to apply for a Tier 4 UK VISA and other travel-related costs.

3. Margaret McNamara Education Grants 2023

The Margaret McNamara Education Grants (MMEG) is a charity that supports the education of exceptional self-identifying women aged at least 25 years enrolled at select universities in South Africa, the US and Canada. 

The grant supports women from Middle-Income Countries listed here who are registered at UJ (for candidates applying for UJ). It covers all fields of study toward a Certificate, Undergraduate, Graduate, or Post-Doctorate qualification. The grant provides funding of up to $7,000, although funds may vary depending on the availability of funding.

4. Southern African Development Community (SADC) Annual Scholarships

The program is funded by SADC and designed to address the historical, economical, and political development of the SADC region. A total of 5 scholarships are awarded annually to successful candidates from SADC countries each year. Candidates must be social science postgraduate students intending to pursue doctoral or post-doctoral research. 

Male candidates must be aged 30 years or below, while female candidates must be aged 35 years or below for the Master’s program. For the Doctoral program, male candidates must be aged 35 or younger, while female candidates must be aged 40 or younger. 

In 2022, the scholarship was valued at R300,000, covering tuition, travel, housing allowance, and health insurance. It is supplemented by R15,000 for essential expenses. Scholarship opening dates are currently unknown, so interested candidates keep checking on the UJ scholarships page for updates.

5. The Orange Knowledge Programme Scholarship

The fully-funded scholarships are offered by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and support students studying short courses or Master’s Degree programs that focus on Sexual Reproductive Health, Security and Rule of Law, Food and Nutrition Security, or Water Management. They must also be living in one of the eligible countries, including South Africa, working in the priority areas, and be able to motivate their application as instructed.

There are 2 rounds of applications running between 8 February – 30 March for courses starting between 24 July 2023 and 31 January 2024, and 28 June – 5 September for courses starting after 1 February 2024.

6. Germany: Post-Doctoral Research Stay For University Academics And Scientists

This programme offers academics the opportunity to network amongst colleagues and exchange experience through fully-funded short-term research stays in Germany. It is open to university teachers and established academics and scientists who hold doctoral degrees and work at institutions in their home countries.

Successful candidates are entitled to monthly payments of 2,000 euros for assistant teachers, assistant professors, and lecturers, and 2,150 euros for professors. It also covers travel allowance, including carbon footprint offsetting.

7. China: Master’s: Renmin University of China – Master of Contemporary Chinese Studies Scholarship

This is a fully-funded scholarship that gives support to students to go study in China, It offers full coverage of tuition fees, accommodation, medical insurance, and monthly allowance. It is open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students  To be eligible, undergraduate students must be aged 30 years and below, and Master’s students must be aged 35 and below. They must also be in good health and have no criminal record.

8. Fulbright South African Research Scholar Program+

It is supported by Emory’s Halle Institute for Global Research and allows students to spend up to four months at Emory, where they are sponsored by suitable departments and programs. The scholarships cover the following:

  • Monthly allowance based on the cost of living at the research site.
  • Monthly dependent allowance for accompanying dependents.
  • Round trip airfare for the scholarship-holder.
  • Excess baggage allowance for return travel.
  • Professional allowance for books, conferences, and seminars.
  • Settling-in allowance.
  • Primary medical insurance coverage for the grantee.

When applying, candidates must indicate how they plan to share their research and teaching with professors and students throughout Emory University and at their home institution. They must also show how the semester will encourage disciplinary, transdisciplinary, and/or multidisciplinary research.

Applications for the Fulbright scholarship are currently closed and will open between April and May 2023 for the 2024-2025 cycle. More details can be found here.
