NATIONAL STUDENT FINANCIAL AID SCHEME (NSFAS) INVITES SOUTH AFRICAN STUDENTS TO APPLY FOR A BURSARY PROGRAMME/FUNDING 2023 ACADEMIC YEAR

National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) invites students to apply for Bursary Programme / Funding 2023 academic year.

DEADLINE: The applications system will be open from 28 September 2022 until 30 November 2022 when the NSC results are released.

Do you wish to study or are already studying at a public university or TVET college and come from a family with an income of R350 000 or less? Then STOP and read this:

You qualify for a government bursary offered via the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS)

What is NSFAS?

NSFAS is a government entity under the Department of Higher Education and Training established according to the NSFAS Act (Act 56 of 1999) to provide financial support to disadvantaged students who wish to further their studies at public universities or TVET colleges.

What does the bursary cover?

Amounts indicated of accommodation, living allowance, transport and learning materials need to be aligned with the approved latest DHET guidelines.

UNIVERSITY

  • Accommodation: As per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)
  • Transport (up to 40 km from institution) R7 500  per annum
  • Living allowance R15, 000  per annum
  • Book allowances R5200 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum for students in catered residences

TVET

  • Accommodation in an urban area R24,000 per annum
  • Accommodation in an peri-urban area R18,900 per annum
  • Accommodation in an rural area R15,750 per annum
  • Transport (up to 40 km from institution) R7,350  per annum
  • Transport R7000 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum

Who qualifies for NSFAS funding?

  • All South African citizens
  • All SASSA grant recipients qualifies for funding
  • Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum
  • Person with disability: Combined household income must not be more than R600 000 per annum
  • Students who started studying before 2018 whose household income is not more than R122 000 per annum.

Who should not apply?

  • Students who have completed a previous qualification.
  • Students with a combined household income of more than R350 000 per annum.
  • Students who have already applied, qualified and received funding. They are automatically funded for the duration of their studies provided they pass their modules and meet the academic requirements.

List of required supporting documents

  1. All applicants must provide a copy of ID. A temporary ID issued by the Department of Home Affairs will be accepted;
  2. Non-SASSA applicants must provide ID copies of parent/s, legal guardian/guardian or spouse;
  3. Smart ID cards: a copy with both sides of the smart ID must be provided;
  4. Proof of income: applicant and/or parents/legal guardian/spouse (where applicable (non-
  5. SASSA) should provide latest payslip not older 3 months, UIF letter, appointment letter, retrenchment letter (applicant and/or parent(s), legal guardian/spouse).
  6. It must be noted that no affidavits will be accepted as proof for any funding requirement.

How and where to apply

You can apply online via www.nsfas.org.za using your cellphone, tablet or computer.

Step 1: Go to www.nsfas.org.za and click on the ‘myNSFAS’ tab
Step 2: Create a myNSFAS account
Step 3: Click on the ‘APPLY’ tab and complete the sections on the screen
Step 4: Upload required supporting documents where applicable
Step 5: Click on ‘Submit’

  • If you do not have a digital device or access to the internet, do not stress, simply pop into your nearest National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) or Thusong Centre to apply following the same steps.
  • Prospective students are urged to apply to institutions via their application processes for a study place, as funding is only offered to students who are eligible for funding from NSFAS (financial eligibility) and who obtain a firm place to study in an approved programme at a public institution.
