Nuclear Engineering Bursary for Young South Africans (Lesedi Nuclear Services Pty Ltd)

Nuclear Engineering Bursary

Lesedi Nuclear Services is offering bursaries for up to 20 qualifying previously disadvantaged engineers who wish to pursue a career in Nuclear Science and Technology in the 2023 academic year. Successful candidates will receive a bursary that will cover registration, tuition, university residence, as well as a stipend.

In response to the international nuclear energy renaissance, the prospects of a new multipurpose research reactor and 2500 MW of new nuclear in South Africa, Lesedi Nuclear Services, based in Cape Town, has partnered with EWSETA in the pursuit of creating a pipeline of young nuclear-qualified graduates. Partnered with North-West University for the delivery of these nuclear training programmes summarized below:

Postgraduate Diploma in Nuclear Science and Technology:
This PGDip focuses on teaching the theory that prepares students for the Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Engineering Sciences with Nuclear Engineering, which focuses on the optimization of nuclear reactor design. Candidates should have the following minimum requirements:

  • A degree such as the BEng or BIng, BSc (Eng), or equivalent qualification that exits at NQF level 8; or
  • A three-year BSc degree with Physics at third-year level and at least one of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics; or
  • Computer Science at least second-year level (exits at NQF level 7); or
  • A BTech (Engineering) degree that exits at NQF level 7 with an average grade of at least 60% for the final year or a BEngTech (Engineering) degree that exits at NQF level 8 with an average of at least 60%

Postgraduate Diploma in Nuclear Science and Technology with Nuclear Technology Management:

This PGDip focuses on teaching the theory that prepares students for the Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Engineering Sciences with Nuclear Engineering and Nuclear Technology Management degree, which focuses on the optimization of Nuclear Technology Management. Candidates should have the following minimum requirements:

  • A degree such as the BEng or BIng, BSC (Eng) or equivalent qualification that exits at NQF level 8; or
  • A three-year BSc degree with Physics at, at least second-year level and at least one of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics or Computer Science at, at least second-year level (exits at NQF level 7); or
  • A BTech (Engineering) degree that exits at NQF level 7; or 
  • A BEngTech (Engineering) degree that exits at NQF level 8

The selected candidates will embark on theoretical learning at the North-West University in Potchefstroom. Upon Successful completion, the practical and work-based learning will be carried out at Lesedi’s offices

  • Lesedi House (Century City) in Cape Town
  • Koeberg Nuclear Power Station
  • Centurion Office in Gauteng
  • Other local/global sites
