The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is a Regional Economic Community comprising 16 Member States, namely; Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eswatini,  Lesotho,  Madagascar,  Malawi,  Mauritius, Mozambique,  Namibia,  Seychelles,  South  Africa, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe

Scholarship Announcement

The Secretariat of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) announces the launch of the SADC Annual Scholarship for 2022. All active tertiary school-going learners from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Member States are welcome to participate in the competition. SADC Secretariat Staff and their immediate families are not eligible to apply for these scholarships.

Consequently, the SADC Secretariat will award annual scholarships for the years 2022 and 2023 to full-time taught Masters, Doctoral, Postdoctoral Studies or Research to promote research on the roles played by the SADC Founders. The research scholarship is available to post-graduate researchers in any discipline (who hold a master’s degree as a minimum) who are planning to pursue research or further studies at doctoral or post-doctoral level.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for a SADC Scholarship you must:

  • Be a citizen of a SADC Member State;
  • Return to your country of citizenship after your scholarship has ended;
  • Hold an appropriate undergraduate degree from a recognised university in a relevant field for a Master’s programme;
  • Hold a Masters Degree in a related subject that will enable you to gain entry onto a Doctoral and/or Postdoctoral programme at a university in the SADC region; and
  • Provide the IELTS (Band 6) certificate or TOEFL (minimum score: 550 paper based, 213 computer based, 80 internet based) for courses in English for applicants from non-native English speaking countries.

All active tertiary school-going learners from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Member States are welcome to participate in the competition. SADC Secretariat Staff and their immediate families are not eligible to apply for these scholarships

Host Institution/s

One/any of the universities, institutes of technology or public teaching and research institutes in the SADC region.

Level/Field of study

Full-time  taught  Masters,  Doctoral,  Postdoctoral Studies or Research in social sciences which specifically address: (a) historical dimensions of development and peace in the SADC region since colonialism; (b) regional economic and political integration and (c) democracy.

Number of Scholarships and Value in USD

A total of five (5) annual scholarships will be offered up to a value of USD 20,000.00 each: Two (2) for Doctoral studies and three (3) for the Masters level research.

Scholarship benefits/inclusions

The scholarship covers a monthly living allowance of USD 1,000.00 to cover essential expenditure, tuition fees, health insurance, an economy class return airfare and housing allowance. The scholarship duration is 12–24 months (depending on the particular institution) for Masters and 36–48 months for PhD programmes.

The monthly living allowance will be paid to the students’ official bank accounts. Upon being awarded the scholarships, the students will be given detailed information about the payment procedures of the scholarship. The first instalment of the scholarship can only be received after the completion of University enrolment and the submission of all the documents requested according to the necessary administrative procedures.

Application Instructions

Applications for SADC scholarships can only be submitted through the SADC National Contact Points at Member States level: https://www.sadc.int/member-states/ .

The deadline for applications is 30 April 2022.

Entries will be initially screened and judged by the Ministries of Education in all respective SADC Member States and consequently submit the top two

(2) applications per each Member State to SADC Secretariat for adjudication at regional level and selection of the top five (5) overall winners.

Entry through adjudication by the three (3) selected SADC panelists/judges, and the decision of the Secretariat shall be final. Entries from lecturers/ tutors and employees of tertiary schools will not be accepted, and shall not be entered for adjudication.

The applicants should submit their formal application which should include the following:

Admission Requirements for Masters Programmes:

  • Maximum age of 30 years for male and 35 years for female applicants;
  • Undergraduate degree from a recognized university in a relevant field;
  • Certified copies of academic certificates and transcripts;
  • Certified copies of Passport or National I.D. card indicating citizenship;
  • Recent colored passport-size photograph;
  • Detailed CV with names and contacts of three referees;
  • Copy of admission letter from a recognized University in the SADC region;
  • Two (2) Reference Letters with contact details; and
  • An essay of not more than 500 words that explains why the candidate has chosen his/her particular field of study and its importance to the memories of the SADC Founders.

Admission Requirements for Doctoral Programmes:

  • Maximum age of 35 years for male and 40 years for female applicants;
  • A Master’s degree from a recognized university in a relevant field;
  • Certified copies of academic certificates and transcripts;
  • Certified copies of Passport or National I.D. card indicating citizenship;
  • Recent colored passport-size photograph;
  • Detailed CV with names and contacts of three referees;
  • Copy of admission letter from a recognized University in the SADC region;
  • Two (2) Reference Letters with contact details; and
  • An essay of not more than 500 words that explains why the candidate has chosen his/her particular field of study and its importance to the memories of the SADC Founders.

The Secretariat reserves the right not to award any scholarship if the entries do not satisfactorily meet the competition requirements.
