The GEFT bursary

The GEFT bursary is offered to young South African students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds who are eligible to study towards their honours or master’s degrees in Economics or related fields at a recognised South African university.

Applicants must be in the process of applying for either an honours or master’s in these or related disciplines: Economics, Economic Science, Applied Economics, Development Economics, Behavioural Economics, International Development and Public Health: Epidemiology or Health Economics.

Applicants must have achieved a consistent average of 65% and above for their undergraduate and/or honours degrees. The bursary is primarily available to cover tuition fees as well as books and stationery. Dependent on available funds, GEFT may be in a position to contribute towards additional needs such as accommodation and transport.

How to Apply for the Bursary

Please apply online using the link below. Applications for 2023 close on 9 January 2023. A complete application must consist of the following:

  • A comprehensive CV
  • A copy of your South African identity document
  • A motivational letter
  • Full academic transcripts from your very first year of study to date. Please note that full transcripts must be uploaded as a single document
  • A writing sample (e.g. an essay, proposal, or assignment. This must be a recent submission from the current or previous academic year)

Process

  • Applications are received and screened against required skills, competencies and experience
  • An initial exploratory telephonic interview will be held
  • You will be asked to complete an online case study assessment
  • Shortlisted candidates will undergo a panel interview
  • Successful candidates are added to our internship database and offers are made dependent on available project work.
