The University of Cape Town invites applications for a full-time Associate Professor or Professor in Urban Studies for a five-year period

The African Centre for Cities (ACC) at the University of Cape Town and Urban Studies at the University of Basel invite applications for a full time Associate Professor or Professor in Urban Studies for a five-year period (1 August 2024 – 31 July 2029).

We are looking for a leading scholar with an outstanding publication record and research experience on African cities. Particularly encouraged are scholars whose work advances current debates in Southern and global urbanism.

The African Centre for Cities (ACC) was established in 2007 at the University of Cape Town as an urban research institute. The ACC is based in the School of Architecture, Planning and Geomatics in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, but is interdisciplinary in scope, drawing on expertise on urban issues from across the university. The mission of the ACC is to “facilitate critical urban research and policy discourses for the promotion of vibrant, democratic and sustainable urban development in the global South”.

The ACC has a collaborative programme with Urban Studies at the Department of Social Sciences within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Basel. A key element of this collaboration is the joint teaching of the Masters in Critical Urbanisms at the University of Basel. As part of this Masters, students based at Urban Studies at the University of Basel have the option of undertaking a one semester study abroad track hosted at the African Centre for Cities at the University of Cape Town.

The Associate Professor or Professor in Urban Studies will be affiliated with both institutions but will be based at the African Centre for Cities at the University of Cape Town. They will undertake up to three visits per year to the University of Basel (Switzerland) to teach on the Masters in Critical Urbanisms and offer related support to wider research and teaching endeavors at the University of Basel. The Associate Professor or Professor is also expected to be the pedagogical lead for Critical Urbanisms students who undertake the semester study abroad track at the ACC and to teach on other Masters programmes at the ACC, such as the Masters in Southern Urbanism.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant team of scholars at the African Centre for Cities at the University of Cape Town and Urban Studies at the University of Basel. We are seeking to appoint a world class scholar whose research interests will complement – and extend – the interests of existing members of staff. The successful candidate must have a proven track record in urban scholarship and teaching experience appropriate to the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
