Short Description / Purpose of Job

Sasol Sasolburg Operations invites recently graduated engineers, currently unemployed, to apply for a one year trainee position.  The graduate trainee positions are non permanent employment (NPE) positions aimed at providing young engineering professionals the opportunity to gain valuable work experience whilst performing engineering work in the Sasolburg Operations Technical Support environment.   The engineering graduate trainees shall work as part of a plant technical support team and be assigned typical duties in technical investigations, plant design documentation maintenance, supporting unit engineers in implementation of small projects and in monitoring and reporting of plant operating status.

This programme is thus an “on the job” trainee opportunity within the Technical Support team environment and must not be confused with the Sasol Graduate Development Programme.

Engineering trainees shall typically be assigned work under the supervision of an experienced unit engineer in the plant environment and work assignments are expected to include:

Chemical / Process Engineering Internship typical duties:

  • Execution of mass and energy balances
  • Review and updating of design documentation such as Equipment Data Sheets and MFD’s in support of plant modification projects or plant as-built status reviews
  • Supporting unit engineers in implementation of plant modification projects
  • Contribute to process safety studies and close-out of existing studies as support to plant unit engineers.   This can include investigation and data gathering of plant incidents, calculations of emission quantities during environmental incidents, sizing calculations for Relief valve checks, follow up on actions to close out existing plant modifications, etc
  • Operations support activities during plant maintenance shut down events,
  • Participate in process safety management initiative work such as tank overfill improvement studies, winterization improvements to plant designs, alarm management investigations
  • Support unit engineers with root cause analysis (RCA) activities – collection of incident data and participation in studies to investigate failure incidents.

Control & Instrumentation engineering duties:

  • Updating and creating new control & instrumentation (I&C) related documentation
  • Development of OsiSoft PI tools and dashboards
  • Smart Plant Instrumentation – In tools (updates and new loops)
  • IS calculations – audits and new approvals required
  • Alarm management: Documentation & Rationalisation evaluation and implementations
  • Updating and creating new disaster recovery and maintenance manuals (APC, DCS, ESD, PLC, other).
  • Cybersecurity assessments and implementations
  • As-building of C&I equipment

Reliability Engineering duties:

  • Data analysis, validation and control to ensure quality and repeatability
  • Data entry as required across multiple systems (Meridium and SAP primarily)
  • General support to the Reliability engineers.
  • Development of new tools, systems and processes

Formal Education

  • Minimum B. Eng or BSc Eng degree obtained within the past 3 years.
  • No previous work experience is prescribed.
