UNFPA recruits young professionals from Africa and of African descent

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has launched a new programme to hire young talent from Africa and of African descent. The Young Professionals from Africa and of African Descent programme is a starting point for an exciting career with the United Nations, aiming to attract motivated young professionals with diverse academic and professional backgrounds.

Open to qualified candidates who are 32 years of age or younger in 2021, who self-identify as a person of African descent or are an African national, the programme offers an opportunity for selected candidates to gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced, international environment and the potential to grow into impactful leadership roles in international development.

In 2021, UNFPA will recruit five young professionals to join the team at the UNFPA headquarters in New York. The young professionals will be offered a competitive salary and benefits package with an initial one-year fixed-term appointment at the P-2 level, renewable at least once, subject to satisfactory performance.

Geospatial Information Analyst, Population and Development Branch, Technical Division, New York, P-2

The Position:

The Geospatial Information Analyst position is part of the UNFPA Young Professionals from Africa and of African Descent programme. The programme is open to qualified candidates who are 32 years of age or younger in 2021, who self-identify as a person of African descent or are an African national. The programme is intended to provide on-the-job training for young professionals who wish to obtain practical experience in international development and have the potential to grow into impactful leadership roles across the organization.

You will report directly to the Chief, Population and Development Branch, Technical Division.

Job Purpose:

The Geospatial Information Analyst performs tasks to gather, interpret, manipulate, analyze, process, validate and use geospatial data and information related to access to services analysis in accordance with UNFPA mandates. He/she will support geospatial specialists within the Population and Development Branch in building, maintaining, modifying, or using geospatial databases. May perform custom application development or provide user support when required.

Qualifications and Experience

Education:  

Advanced university degree in geography, geospatial information and analysis, public health, or related geo-sciences.

Knowledge and Experience: 

  • 2 years of experience in geospatial science, demography and health data, statistics, or information management;
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely;
  • Initiative, sound judgment and demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with staff members from different national and cultural backgrounds;
  • Prior experience in developing countries is an asset.

Languages: 

Fluency in English is required; knowledge of other official UN languages, preferably French and/or Spanish, is desirable.

Programme Analyst, Operational Support & Quality Assurance Branch, Policy and Strategy Division, New York, P-2

You will report directly to the Global Programme Coordinator, Policy and Strategy Division.

The Programme Analyst supports programme planning and quality assurance, innovation and digitalization. He/she will support the Global Programme Coordinator by liaising with the regional offices, with a specific focus on Africa. 

Qualifications and Experience

Education:  

Advanced university degree in social sciences or related fields with specific knowledge of international development.

Knowledge and Experience: 

  • 2 years of experience in development policy or programming;

  • Knowledge of ICT-digitalization systems business solutions required;

  • Ability to write clearly and concisely;

  • Initiative, sound judgment and demonstrated ability to work harmoniously

    with staff members from different national and cultural backgrounds;

  • Earlier experience in UN/UNFPA is an asset.

Languages: 

Fluency in English and French is required; knowledge of other official UN languages is an asset.
