The Centre for Lung Infection and Immunity (CLII) (http://www.lunginstitute.co.za), invites applications for a RESEARCH NURSE* on a Fixed Term Contract.

CLII is based within the Division of Pulmonology in the Department of Medicine at UCT and is committed to the pursuit of excellence in research, treatment, training and prevention of TB and COVID-19 in Southern Africa. CLII conducts various HIV, TB, and COVID-19-related research projects at numerous sites in Cape Town.

The successful incumbent will assist with the care and assessment of participants as well as the collection of specimens and research data related to studies of TB and COVID-19.

This is a Full-Time (40 hours per week), 6-month Fixed Term Contract position.

Essential Requirements:

  • Qualification as a Professional Nurse
  • Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC)
  • 2 to 5 years’ experience in nursing
  • Fluency in English, Afrikaans and /or isiXhosa
  • Good interpersonal, communication and time management skills
  • Good Computer Skills (MS Excel or Data Management systems, email, internet)
  • Valid Driver’s license
  • Own reliable transport
  • Willingness to travel to various CLII research sites
  • Credit and Criminal Clear

The following will be advantageous:

  • Previous research or clinical research experience
  • Interest in Infectious Diseases Research
  • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) with current GCP certification
  • Previous experience working with TB patients, especially drug-resistant TB patients

Responsibilities:

  • In-Hospital and Clinic recruitment of patients:
    • Taking care of participants during their assessment visits
    • Escorting participants from transport bus at hospital entrance
  • Arranging appointments and follow-up of research participants
  • Obtaining baseline clinical information and informed consent
  • Assistance with medical examination; phlebotomy and labelling of blood samples
  • Assist with pre-and post-test counselling for research participants
  • Booking of clinical visits (communication with participants and their relatives)
  • Liaison with clinical research team
  • Administration of questionnaires; routine BP, urine analysis, height and weight measurements, performing of ECGs
  • Completing of study-related source documentation according to the specified protocols and GCP requirements.
