Understanding the SASSA SRD Grant: Eligibility Criteria and Application Process

Understanding the SASSA SRD Grant: Eligibility Criteria and Application Process

Millions of unemployed South Africans rely on the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant to cover basic needs. Many applicants are still unsure who qualifies, how to apply and why applications are sometimes declined. This guide explains the grant in plain language so that you can apply with confidence.

What Is the SRD Grant?

The SRD grant is a temporary form of support from the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) for people who have little or no income. It acts as a safety net for unemployed South Africans with no other income who are not receiving another social grant.

It also works differently from permanent grants such as the Older Persons Grant. The SRD grant is reassessed every month, and SASSA checks your details against bank records, SARS, UIF, NSFAS and Home Affairs databases. Being approved once does not guarantee payment every month.

How Much Is the Grant and How Long Will It Run?

Successful applicants receive R370 per month during the extension period from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027. Some websites quote a different figure, so always confirm the current amount on the official SRD website before relying on any third-party source.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, you generally need to meet all of the following requirements.

Age. The grant is aimed at unemployed South Africans between 18 and 59 years old.

Citizenship or legal status. Applicants may be South African citizens, permanent residents, recognised refugees or valid asylum seekers.

Income. The SRD income threshold is linked to the StatsSA food poverty line and is currently R624 per month. Your income from all sources is assessed against this limit.

No other social support. You cannot receive the SRD grant if you already get another SASSA grant such as the Child Support, Disability, Older Persons, Foster Child or Grant-in-Aid grants. You are also blocked if you receive UIF or NSFAS, or if you are a government employee.

If you are unsure whether you qualify, it is better to apply and let SASSA assess your situation than to assume you will be declined.

What You Need Before You Apply

Have the following ready:

  1. Your 13-digit South African ID number, or your refugee or asylum documents where relevant
  2. A cellphone number registered in your own name that you can access, since SASSA uses it to verify you and send updates
  3. Your banking details if you choose bank payment, which are only requested after approval

How to Apply

The SRD grant is the only SASSA grant that you can apply for entirely online without visiting a SASSA office. There are three ways to apply: online, by WhatsApp or by USSD, which needs no internet.

Online. Go to srd.sassa.gov.za on any phone or computer, then select the option to apply and follow the prompts.

WhatsApp and USSD. Use the official SASSA WhatsApp line or USSD service. Always confirm the number on the official SASSA website before using any channel.

In person. If you struggle with technology, you can ask for help at a SASSA office.

You do not need to apply every month, and you should never pay anyone to help you apply. Anyone who asks for money is likely a scammer.

Checking Your Status

You can check your status at srd.sassa.gov.za, on WhatsApp at 082 046 8553, or by dialling 1203210#. You will need your ID number and the cellphone number you used to apply.

Payment

The SRD grant does not pay on a fixed date like other grants. It is processed in batches. Do not worry if friends or relatives are paid before you.

What to Do If Your Application Is Declined

A decline does not always mean the end. Common reasons include income detected in bank records, receipt of UIF or NSFAS, or data mismatches with government databases. If you believe the decision is wrong, you can submit an appeal. Appeals are handled by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA). Check the appeal deadline on the SRD website and submit your appeal within that time.

If your application is cancelled, you may need to reinstate it on the SRD website. SASSA may also ask you to reconfirm your details, so respond promptly when you receive a request.

Tips to Avoid Problems

  • Keep your cellphone number active and registered in your name.
  • Make sure your banking details are correct and the account is in your own name.
  • Report any change in circumstances, such as new employment.
  • Use only official SASSA channels and never share your PIN or OTP with anyone.
  • Check your status regularly rather than waiting for a message.

Need Help?

You can contact the SASSA call centre on 0800 60 10 11 or visit the official website at www.sassa.gov.za.

Final Word

The SRD grant offers short-term relief, but it works best when applicants understand the rules and keep their information up to date. Check your eligibility, apply through official channels and keep an eye on your status each month. Since the rules and amounts can change, always confirm the latest details on the official SASSA SRD website before you apply.
