Technical training for technicians programme at CERN

About CERN Technical Training for Technicians (TTE Programme)

If you’re a qualified technician looking to gain world class, hands on experience at one of the most advanced scientific organisations on the planet, the CERN Technician Training Experience (TTE) Programme could be exactly the opportunity you need to elevate your career.

    About CERN

CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is where physicists and engineers work to understand the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments, CERN studies the basic building blocks of matter by colliding fundamental particles at close to the speed of light. This work gives scientists crucial insight into how particles interact and helps uncover the fundamental laws of nature.

Beyond its scientific mission, CERN places real value on developing technical talent from across its member states, and diversity has been part of the organisation’s identity since it was founded.

What the Technician Training Experience Involves

The Technician Training Experience, commonly known as TTE, is a structured programme aimed at technicians looking for a challenging professional experience that genuinely advances their career. Rather than being a short observation placement, TTE is typically a two year traineeship that immerses participants directly in CERN’s technical operations.

Depending on your specialisation, work under the TTE programme can include:

    • Assembling, testing, and maintaining highly specialised scientific equipment
    • Working within technical divisions such as cryogenics, vacuum systems, cooling, electronics, or mechanical engineering
    • Designing or manufacturing custom parts and tools needed for ongoing projects
    • Contributing to the maintenance and operation of magnets and components used in CERN’s particle accelerators
    • Collaborating closely with engineers and physicists on projects that push the boundaries of technology

Participants of the programme have gone on to build serious careers, with several former TTE technicians moving on to major international science projects and high tech industry roles after completing their time at CERN, thanks to the depth of experience and confidence the programme builds.

    Who Can Apply

To qualify for a place on the CERN Technician Training Experience, applicants generally need to meet the following requirements:

    • Be a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State
    • Hold a recognised Technical Diploma in a relevant field
    • Have no more than four years of relevant work experience after completing your diploma
    • Have at least a working knowledge of English or French

If you are still studying towards your technical qualification, you may still be eligible to apply, provided you are expected to have obtained your qualification by the start of your appointment at CERN. It’s worth noting that this specific programme is designed for technicians, so candidates holding a BSc or MSc are generally not eligible for TTE, though they may instead qualify for CERN’s separate Fellowship Programme.

Relevant technical fields recognised for the programme typically include mechanics, electronics, electricity, IT, vacuum systems, cooling and ventilation, and process engineering.

Why This Programme Is Worth Applying For

Taking part in the CERN Technician Training Experience offers benefits that are difficult to find anywhere else:

    • Hands on experience working with some of the most advanced scientific instruments in the world
    • The chance to work in an international, multicultural environment alongside leading engineers and physicists
    • Exposure to highly specialised technical fields that are in short supply across Europe and beyond
    • A meaningful boost to your CV and professional credibility within the global scientific and engineering community
    • A strong track record of graduates moving into major science projects and high tech industry roles after completing the programme

For technicians looking to genuinely stand out in their field, few opportunities offer the same combination of prestige, technical depth, and international exposure as a placement at CERN.

    How To Apply

Applications for the Technician Training Experience are submitted through the official CERN careers portal. CERN typically runs two application rounds throughout the year, so it’s worth checking the site regularly for the next open call.

    When applying, make sure to:

    • Confirm your nationality qualifies under CERN’s Member State or Associate Member State criteria
    • Prepare proof of your Technical Diploma and relevant work experience
    • Ensure your English or French language ability meets the minimum requirement
    • Apply during an active application round, since CERN does not accept applications outside these designated periods

If you’re a technician ready to take your skills to one of the most respected scientific institutions in the world, the CERN Technician Training Experience is an opportunity well worth pursuing.
