The DTHF Clinical Trials Unit is located at J52, Old Main Building, Groote Schuur Hospital with a community outreach team located in Phillipi Village. It has conducted over 60 clinical trials in HIV prevention and treatment. The LGBT+ Health Division is located within J52 and has participated in several ground-breaking clinical trials in HIV prevention focussed on LGBT+ communities. We are looking for a Fieldworker to join our community outreach team.

This full-time one (1) year fixed-term contract position will be based primarily at the community outreach offices at Philippi Village and working in the field, with expected attendance of regular meetings and activities at Groote Schuur. The Fieldworker will be working in a community outreach setting to recruit people who are interested in HIV prevention studies. This Fieldworker post is aimed at working with LGBT+ with a particular focus on transgender communities in Cape Town. Job requirements also include planning and attendance of community engagement activities such as outreach events to support visibility and awareness of LGBT+ communities; and recruitment and retention events for all trials conducted at the J52 Trials Unit. The Fieldworker must be knowledgeable of the transgender community, and ideally a member of trans networks in Cape Town.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Grade 12
  • One (1) year community engagement or recruitment experience
  • Two (2) year experience in event planning and management
  • Knowledgeable of the LGBT+ community and networks within the community
  • Knowledgeable or a member of trans networks in Cape Town
  • Knowledgeable about social media platforms and how to engage on social media
  • Computer literacy MS Office; including data entry
  • Good planning and organising skills
  • Client (participant) focussed
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) – fluent in English. Afrikaans and isiXhosa advantageous
  • Able to work as a member of a team
  • Be proactive as an individual
  • Detail oriented
  • Maintain study and participant confidentiality
  • Ability to work under pressure, whilst maintaining the ability to remain professional
  • Able to work later hours including weekends

Responsibilities:

  • Recruit participants and schedule visits
  • Complete accurate data collection activities with participants, including questionnaires, interviews, and transcriptions
  • Communicate regular updates to project staff and management
  • Ensure all project administration is completed daily
  • Basic education: approach to address community groups or individuals, hand out trial recruitment pamphlets and answer basic questions.
  • Assist with planning of Recruitment/Retention strategies and Events
  • Assist in implementing the Community Engagement Plan (CEP) / Community Involvement Work Plan (CIWP)
  • Assist the Community Liaison Officer with stakeholder engagement by identifying opportunities of involvement, arranging, participating, facilitating, and attending meetings
  • Liaise with research site staff on all participant related information
  • Assist in diversity training with a focus on LGBT+ populations
  • Convene monthly Trans Safe Spaces with community members
  • Attend community outreach events for representation and visibility particularly in Trans networks
