About the Position

SARS is looking for a self-motivated, passionate person who can work well as part of a team and independently at times and engage with other teams, various internal stakeholders, and systems/tools. This person will join a highly motivated and capable team and take responsibility for accurate accounting and reconciliation of taxpayer and bank accounts.

This Revenue Accountant role is responsible for accounting, reconciling, bank reconciliation and exception handling within the Revenue Accounting team, whilst following accounting best practices in the scope of Revenue Accounting. The key deliverables of the role will include to:

  • identify issues, discrepancies and risks in reconciling financial accounts,
  • utilise SAP to draw and analyse reports in a logical way,
  • formulate the correct solution or line of action and engage the appropriate person when needed and provide assistance/guidance,
  • collating/processing of the correct and accurate accounting entries/actions,
  • ensure proper supporting documentation for audit trail purposes are retained, whilst following strict segregation of duties.

The person must be a quick learner with the ability to apply accounting principles within various areas, project environments and assist in system testing where needed. Solid accounting knowledge and experience is a requirement.   This person will work directly with the Customs Revenue Accounting team,  Customs Business/SARS Operations, engage the SAP system Super Users support when needed and ad hoc assistance across the Revenue Accounting team and other SARS business areas.  Knowledge of the SARS revenue accounting systems, general ledger, accrual and cash accounting is a prerequisite, as well as an understanding of the strategy of SARS and how it impacts the key objective results of the various clusters. Advanced Excel knowledge and experience on SAP accounting functionalities is a prerequisite.

Job Purpose

To provide financial operational and analytical support by analysing, preparing, reviewing and processing financial related transactions, reconcile clear and balance accounts, resolve queries/ discrepancies and generate reports.

Education and Experience

Minimum Qualification & Experience Required

Relevant National Accounting Diploma / Advanced Accounting Certificate   (NQF 6) AND 3-4 years’ experience in a similar financial environment, of which 1-2 years ideally at knowledge worker level

Senior Certificate (NQF 4) AND 6 years Finance related experience in a similar environment
