SAIIA seeks to appoint an early career professional fellow for an 18-month fellowship at SAIIA and a Brazilian partner organisation.

SAIIA is implementing the project BRICS Shaping Economic Cooperation for Green Growth, Development and the Just Transition: Partnership Between Brazil and South Africa, with the support of the South African BRICS Think Tank (implementation period 1 November 2022 to 31 October 2024).

The objective of the project is to contribute towards shaping a Global South economic cooperation agenda that supports green growth, development and a just transition in targeted countries and in global economic governance forums. This will be achieved through research, policy dialogues, network development and capacity building activities centred on Brazil’s and South Africa’s approaches and positions on climate’s intersect with trade, a just transition, finance, and industrialisation.

The project includes the following outputs:

  • Working papers and policy briefs focused on 1) climate and trade, 2) climate and the just transition, 3) climate finance, and 4) climate and technology.
  • Three policy dialogues (in Sao Paulo/Brasilia, Johannesburg/Pretoria, Addis Ababa) will take place throughout the two-year project period to provide opportunity to gain insights into the specific thematic areas which will inform the working papers and policy briefs.
  • An edited volume will be produced and accompanied by a hybrid book launch.
  • foresight workshop will be convened focusing on exploring the trajectory for the development of a Global South-friendly climate governance architecture through enhanced BRICS economic cooperation.
  • Brazil-South Africa climate and just transition dialogue platform will be established, contributing towards a community of practice focused on the green growth, economic cooperation and development concerns of the Global South.

In support of this project, SAIIA seeks to appoint an early career professional fellow for an 18-month fellowship (May 2023 – October 2024).

Expected responsibilities and outputs

  • Research support to the senior researchers at SAIIA working on the the project BRICS Shaping Economic Cooperation for Green Growth, Development and the Just Transition: Partnership Between Brazil and South Africa
  • Author a peer-reviewed journal article (potentially co-written with the principal researcher/team working at SAIIA)
  • Contribute to other research outputs (papers, policy briefings) as required by the senior research team
  • Lead the drafting of a quarterly project newsletter
  • Assist in the coordination of project workshops and other events
  • Work closely with the project’s Brazil-based partner on assigned research and project support activities

Requirements

This opportunity is only open to South African citizens.

During the South African phase of the fellowship, the fellow will be based at SAIIA’s headquarters in Johannesburg (preferred) or its Cape Town office.

The fellowship includes a period (3-6 months) based at a partner institute in Brazil.

The ideal candidate would have done past research on Brazil and/or the specific themes addressed by the project (see below), as well as having excellent writing/research skills and some level of Portuguese proficiency.

The candidate must have a valid passport and be willing to complete both the South Africa-based and Brazil-based component of the fellowship.

The candidate should be a PhD student or a recent Master’s graduate (there may be some flexibility to accommodate a candidate in the second year of their Master’s programme).

 Thematic topics to be explored through this project:

  1. Strengthening the multilateral trade system for green growth and development: South Africa and Brazil within the WTO
  2. The Just Transition: Reskilling of affected communities in fossil fuel-intensive sectors in Brazil and South Africa
  3. The role of climate financing for green growth and development in Brazil and South Africa
  4. Technological innovation for inclusive growth and green industrialisation in Brazil and South Africa
