List of scholarships offered at the University of Cape Town (UCT)


The University of Cape Town (UCT) is a public research university in Cape Town, South Africa. UCT started as a South African College in 1829. It was granted full university status in 1918. UCT is the oldest university in South Africa and even in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The University of Cape Town is popular for providing innovative and excellent learning opportunities for youths in Africa. 

UCT consists of 57 departments in its 6 faculties namely Health Sciences, Law, Engineering, Commerce, Science, and Humanities. It offers bachelor’s degrees up to doctoral degrees.

As one of the best Universities in South Africa, the University of Cape Town offers various scholarship opportunities every year for both local and international students. 

The University of Cape Town fully funded scholarships for the 2023-2024 academic year were recently announced. Those scholarships will fund any program offered at UCT. This is an opportunity for local and international students who want to study at this beautiful university because the scholarships do not require International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

Below is the list of Fully Funded scholarships for 2023-2024 at UCT.

1. National Research Foundation (NRF) Scholarships. 

This scholarship opportunity is for those who want to study for their master’s and doctoral degrees. The NRF will pay for 2 years for masters and 3 years for a doctoral.

The scholarship includes benefits such as tuition fees, accommodation, food and transport, and technological and electrical costs. Find out more about this scholarship HERE

2. MasterCard Foundation Scholarship Program.

This is a two-year scholarship. This scholarship will close very soon. The University is encouraging its students to apply before the deadline. 

MasterCard Foundation Scholarship is for undergraduate and postgraduate students. This scholarship is also available for international students. Find out more about this scholarship HERE

3. History Access Scholarships.

This scholarship is offered by the Department of Historical Studies. It requires those students who are currently enrolled for master’s and honors degrees. The scholarship only needs 3 candidates for a master’s degree and 6 candidates for an honors degree.

Two main requirements for these scholarships are full knowledge of the African language and students who are good researchers. Find out more about this scholarship HERE

4. Refugee and International Scholarships

Refugee and International Scholarships are available for refugee students who are currently studying postgraduate courses. The scholarship is limited. Usually, they give it to one hardworking student. Those who want to apply for this scholarship must contact the Admissions office. Find out more about this scholarship HERE

5. MMEG Scholarships By UCT.

MMEG stands for Margaret McNamara Education Grant. This scholarship offers only USD 7,000 and it is available for female students. Women who are currently studying for bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees are encouraged to apply. The scholarship is with an age limit of 25 years. Find out more about this scholarship HERE

6. Jagger, JW Trust, and Centenary Scholarship Program. 

This scholarship is for students who want to study or who are currently studying doctoral, master’s, and bachelor’s degrees at UCT. This scholarship is for 1 year only. Find out more about this scholarship HERE

7. Sports Scholarships at UCT.

This scholarship requires candidates who have represented their countries in any sports activity. The applicants must contact the Sports and Recreation Department. Find out more about this scholarship HERE

8. Beit Trust Scholarship

The Trust awards Scholarships at British and South African universities including the University of Cape Town, by means of generous academic partnerships with leading institutions. Beit Trust Scholarships are for Postgraduate degrees only and there are no scholarships for Ph.D. research ab initio. However, the Beit Trust only awards scholarships to students from Southern African Countries. Find out more about this scholarship HERE

9. Faculty Entrance Scholarships, and Faculty Scholarships (undergraduate scholarships)

These scholarships are awarded by different Faculties at the University of Cape Town. The awards are only for undergraduate students however, there is no application process for these awards. Faculties make awards using the information provided in applications for admission and academic achievement in the previous year. Find out more about these scholarships HERE

How to apply for UCT scholarships.

In order to apply for UCT scholarships, candidates need to be enrolled in a certain program by the university. After enrollment, the candidate needs to contact the Head of the Department in order to get scholarship application forms. UCT also allows candidates to apply for scholarships online.
