The Sibanye-Stillwater Digital Mining Laboratory (DigiMine) financial support to study at Wits University

The Sibanye-Stillwater Digital Mining Laboratory (DigiMine) of Wits University is currently receiving applications from potential students interested in pursuing an MSc by research, full-time, on geotechnical aspects of tailings storage facilities (TSFs), sponsored by Sibanye-Stillwater. The specifics of the research topic will be defined in consultation with the successful applicant. The research will be supervised by Dr Luis Torres-Cruz from the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering and co-supervised by Prof M Ahsan Mahboob who is the head of DigiMine. The successful applicant will receive financial support for one year which can be extended to a second year contingent on adequate progress. Further details of the financial support are provided below.

University fees: Covered

  • Monthly living stipend during the first year: R13,000
  • Monthly living stipend during the second year: R7,500
  • International student fees (if applicable): Covered
  • Standard medical aid (only for international students): Covered

Ideally, the successful applicant will start working in January 2024, although this may be postponed by a few months. We are looking for hard-working, self-motivated applicants with strong writing and analytical skills and a history of academic excellence. All other criteria being equal, South African applicants will be given preference over international applicants.
