Advanced Diploma Horticulture (2024 – 2025)

The Kirstenbosch Scholarship was established in 1966 (through the generosity of Ms Yvonne Eustasie Partfitt) to enable suitably qualified candidates to aid in the preservation of the indigenous flora of South Africa.

We are pleased to announce a call for studies in 2024 (only towards Advanced Diploma Horticulture).

Only projects relevant to SANBI’s mandate and identified as a priority will be considered.

Prospective candidates with a special aptitude for botany and research work connected with indigenous flora, in possession of a Diploma in Horticulture (NQF level 6) and with provisional acceptance from a university towards Advanced Diploma (Horticulture) studies in 2024, are invited to apply. The scholarship is only available to South African citizens and will be awarded in line with national equity targets.

The value of this Scholarship is R80 000 per annum (to cover living expenses), plus accommodation at the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden (at a minimal fee). Tuition fees will be paid separately.

The person, to whom an award of a scholarship is made, shall be bound to enter into an agreement between himself/herself and the South African National Biodiversity Institute and will be based at the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, Cape Town for the duration of the scholarship.

Note that the South African National Biodiversity Institute will not bear the cost of the successful candidate’s transport to and from his/her present place of residence and Cape Town at commencement and termination of the scholarship.

Each application is to be accompanied by a standard application form (attached hereto), a letter of application (stating why you should be considered), certified copies of ID and academic record/transcript and highest qualification, two letters of academic reference, proof of provisional acceptance and a one-page project outline.

Successful candidates will be notified by 30 November 2023. SANBI reserves the right not to fill this scholarship.

If no response has been received within 30 days of the closing date, candidates may assume that their applications were unsuccessful.
